Qld: Shortbreaks proving popular for Brisbanites
New research has found more Brisbane residents than ever are sampling tourist attractions
in their own region rather travelling long distances.
A Tourism Queensland survey has found more than 60 per cent of Brisbanites had taken
a short break and stayed in commercial accommodation within two or three hours drive of
home in the past 12 months.
That's up 10 per cent since 1997.
The Sunshine Coast is the most popular region for a short break, followed by the Gold
Coast and northern New South Wales.
Tourism Minister MERRI ROSE says activities like wining and dining, health retreats
and reading appeal strongly to those aged 40 to 54, married couples with no children or
people on high incomes.
She says residents aged under 40 prefer their breaks to include activities like swimming.
bushwalking, horseback riding and sailing.
